Introduction

Whether you are planning a long distance hike, an active day's walk or just a day out in the fresh air, the South East of England has it all. Walking in the region is a joy - there are nationally important landscapes, fascinating heritage in abundance and charming towns and villages to explore. You will be delighted at how quickly you can achieve that sense of getting away from it all.

A network of long-distance paths criss-cross the South East creating a unique variety of exceptional walking. There are four National Trails, the North Downs Way, the South Downs Way, the Thames Path and The Ridgeway which pass through some of England's finest landscapes and all are waymarked and well maintained. Imagine the satisfaction and enjoyment of taking a week out of your busy life and completing one of these trails...

You can explore the National Trails, and the many other long distance walks in the region, on an organised holiday with many different companies offering guided walks, led by people with knowledge of the landscape, wildlife, culture and folklore of the area to share. Or go at your own pace with a self guided holiday - companies can help with your route planning and accommodation booking. They will even lighten your load by moving your bags for you and have them waiting for you at the end of each day. Take a look in our Country Breaks section for some imaginative ideas.

You can escape to the countryside for a day's walking in varied scenery - imagine ambling along a river bank, exploring an ancient landscape or striding out across windswept downland. Circular walks or walks linking to public transport are a great way to really get to know an area.

For a perfect day out, why not combine a short stroll with a visit to a local attraction, country garden, historic house, church or castle? You could stop off at a village pub or teashop and sample the local produce on offer. If a day is not enough, live it up at a range of quality B&Bs, guesthouses and hotels, whilst visiting the sights of the South East on a relaxing short break holiday.

There is something happening all year round - use the events calendar or search on the right to find out more. Many organisations in our region have more information on walks, including seasonal guided walks and countryside events - use our to find more information.
